Grain weight changes how a round leaves the barrel, how it flies, how hard it hits, and how it recoils. Pick the wrong weight for the job and you give up accuracy, energy, or consistency. Pick the right one and your rifle or pistol shoots better with less guesswork. Measuring Bullet Weight

Bullet weight refers only to the projectile—the bit that leaves the barrel—not the case, powder, or primer. It’s measured in grains. There are 7,000 grains in one pound. Rimfire bullets can be down in the 30-grain range; big- and dangerous-game loads can push well past 500 grains. Knowing that spread helps you understand where a given load sits within its calibre family.


What Do Bullet Weights Indicate?

Within any given calibre, common weights cluster in the middle. Loads much lighter or heavier than that “standard” will change performance. They shine in varmint work, high-speed competition stages, or anytime low recoil and quick follow-ups matter more than deep penetration.

Competition drives choices. Precision rifle and long-range matches lean heavy because high BC beats wind. Speed-driven sports (practical/3-Gun/USPSA PCC) often favour lighter or midweight bullets for reduced recoil and faster recovery, though some shooters use heavier subsonic 9mm to smooth recoil impulse. In .223, 69–77gr dominates precision; 55gr or lighter is common for high-volume, close targets.
